Planning Ahead - Overview

Do you think about your future? Perhaps you have a child with special needs you need to plan for, or you're concerned about the financial needs of your parents or an elderly loved one. Planning ahead - whether you're thinking of your own needs or the needs of others - is an important part of estate planning.

Long term financial and personal planning can only protect you. Star One's goal is to provide you with practical information, checklists, and tips that are important to your financial well-being and peace of mind. After all, the more you know, the easier it is for you to take appropriate action.

To begin, we urge you to consult with a qualified professional regarding your estate planning needs. An attorney or other qualified professional can assist you in preparing documents such as a power of attorney, will, trust, and/or a physician's directive.

Star One's Account Services staff will assist you in the designation of a beneficiary on your Star One account or IRA. They can also help you convert your Star One accounts to an established trust, place your Power of Attorney on file with Star One, and review your accounts regarding NCUA Insurance. For assistance with planning and survivor issues, make an appointment with a member of our Beneficiary/Retiree Services Group.

Star One's Beneficiary/Retiree Services Group

Star One's Beneficiary/Retiree Services representatives are devoted to assisting survivors or beneficiaries with Credit Union accounts and loans of a deceased member (or joint owner). In the event of the death of a member or account signer on a Star One account or loan, the appointed legal personal representative for the estate, surviving joint owner, or elected beneficiary should call in advance for an appointment to settle the accounts. Scheduling an appointment helps insure that the documents required are prepared prior to the appointment, or mailed to the legal personal representative for completion. Our telephone number is (866) 543-5202 or (408) 543-5202.

Fight Against Elder Financial Abuse

Star One is committed to assisting members who may be dealing with diminished capacity or may be at risk of elder financial abuse. Star One employees are trained to bring suspected elder financial abuse issues to the attention of the Beneficiary/Retiree Services Group.

We recognize that elder financial abuse is a serious threat to our senior and dependent adult member population. Through our partnership with local authorities and other financial institutions, Star One is taking steps toward educating our members and staff, in raising awareness in the early detection, prevention, and dealing with suspected or known elder financial abuse.
